Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) has dispatched the first rake of its Extreme Weather Grade (XWG) diesel from the Bina Refinery, marking an important development in the supply of specialised fuel for Indian Army operations in high-altitude and severe winter conditions.
The fuel has been developed specifically to address the challenges associated with operating military vehicles in extremely cold and high-altitude environments, where conventional diesel can face performance and reliability limitations.
BPCL’s Corporate R&D Centre (CRDC) and Bina Refinery collaborated on the development of XWG diesel, combining research capabilities with refinery-level production expertise. The indigenous formulation is designed to provide improved fuel performance under demanding climatic conditions.
The specialised diesel is expected to support military logistics by improving the reliability of fuel supplies for vehicles and equipment deployed in difficult terrains. Consistent fuel performance in extreme temperatures can help reduce operational disruptions and contribute to greater mobility and readiness.
The initiative also highlights the role of domestic research and refining capabilities in developing specialised petroleum products for strategic applications. By producing XWG diesel within its refining network, BPCL aims to strengthen the availability of fuel suited to India’s challenging geographical and climatic conditions.
The first dispatch from Bina Refinery represents a step towards supporting more dependable fuel logistics for high-altitude deployments and demonstrates the potential of indigenous fuel technology to address specialised operational requirements.
