OHM Global Mobility (OHM), the electric mobility arm of Ashok Leyland and part of the Hinduja Group, has expanded its electric bus operations in Chennai with the deployment of 130 new air-conditioned electric buses under Phase 2 of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation’s (MTC) electric bus programme.
The latest rollout marks the first batch of a larger 500-bus deployment that OHM will supply and operate for MTC. The buses will be manufactured by Switch Mobility, Ashok Leyland’s electric vehicle subsidiary, and are intended to strengthen Chennai’s cleaner and more sustainable public transport network.
The expansion builds on OHM’s operations under Phase 1, during which its electric buses have collectively covered more than 3 crore green km. The company has also reported over 99% schedule adherence across its Phase 1 depots, highlighting the focus on reliability alongside fleet electrification.
Under Phase 2, OHM will provide end-to-end support covering fleet operations, vehicle maintenance and electric mobility management, enabling the gradual integration of additional electric buses into Chennai’s public transport system.
The air-conditioned buses are expected to offer commuters quieter and more comfortable journeys while supporting the city’s efforts to reduce emissions from urban transportation. The deployment also demonstrates the growing role of electric buses in large-scale public mobility programmes, where fleet reliability and operational efficiency are as important as vehicle electrification.
As the remaining buses are introduced, the Phase 2 programme will further increase the presence of electric public transport on Chennai’s roads and strengthen OHM’s role in supporting scalable electric mobility solutions for urban transportation.
