WABAG secures Rs 415 crore contract for Nemmeli Desalination Plant

WABAG's renewed contract underscores its pivotal role in advancing water technology and reliable supply in Chennai.

VA TECH WABAG has been awarded a contract worth approximately Rs 415 crore by the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewage Board (CMWSSB). The contract is for the operation and maintenance of the 110 MLD Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) Desalination Plant at Nemmeli in Chennai, extending for a period of seven years.

This repeat order follows WABAG’s successful completion of its initial Operation & Maintenance contract, which concluded in 2021. Despite the contract’s initial expiration, WABAG’s performance led to an extension and ultimately, a new public tender that saw the company reaffirmed in its role.

The Nemmeli Desalination Plant, inaugurated in 2013 by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, stands as India’s pioneering municipal desalination facility designed for drinking water on a Design, Build, Operate (DBO) basis. Equipped with cutting-edge SWRO technology, the plant is renowned for its high-quality desalinated water production and energy-efficient processes. The plant plays a crucial role in supplying water to South Chennai, benefiting millions of residents with its reliable and safe water supply.

Shailesh Kumar, CEO – India Cluster, commented on the order, stating, “We are extremely proud to secure this repeat order for the Operation & Maintenance of the 110 MLD Nemmeli Desalination Plant. In line with our Growth Strategy, this new order further strengthens our O&M order book, providing annuity income, improving cash flows, and revenue predictability. This award underscores the continued trust and confidence our client CMWSSB has in our expertise and consistent performance, for which we are extremely thankful. We look forward to continuing our partnership and ensuring the plant operates at peak efficiency, serving the community by providing safe and reliable water supply.”

This renewed contract not only enhances WABAG’s order book but also reinforces its role in advancing water technology and management in India, promising sustained benefits for the Chennai region’s water infrastructure.
