Shyam Metalics expands Jamuria facility with new blast furnace and sinter plant

Shyam Metalics and Energy Ltd (SMEL) has expanded its production footprint by commissioning a high-capacity blast furnace and launching a state-of-the-art sinter plant at its Jamuria facility. This Rs 600-crore investment represents a major leap forward in SMEL’s strategy to meet the ever-increasing demand for premium steel across various industries.

The newly launched blast furnace boasts a robust capacity of 0.77 million ton per annum (MTPA), enhancing the Jamuria plant’s production power significantly. With a substantial volume of 550 cubic meters, the furnace is equipped with top-of-the-line technology, including three top-fired stoves, coal dust injection, and a dry gas cleaning system. The advanced setup is expected to increase steel output by 0.77 MTPA, contributing to an estimated Rs 700 per ton margin boost.

In the words of Brij Bhushan Agarwal, Vice Chairman & Managing Director, Shyam Metalics and Energy Ltd, “At Shyam Metalics, we have always strived for effective and continuous growth plans. The new blast furnace and sinter facility will improve India’s steel production capability. This development demonstrates our commitment to encouraging industrial growth and creating employment opportunities in the region.”

The facility’s design includes an 18 MW Top Gas Pressure Recovery Turbine (TRT), delivering 10 per cent additional energy recovery, alongside a specialized evaporative cooling system. This system is a game-changer, lowering water and power usage by 20 per cent compared to traditional systems and ensuring zero process water discharge—a step in line with SMEL’s sustainable growth vision.

The sinter plant, with a capacity of 1.11 MTPA, is another strategic addition to the facility, transforming iron ore fines into ideal feedstock for the blast furnace. This not only boosts operational efficiency but also significantly cuts down production costs. As part of a broader brownfield expansion, SMEL has prioritized high-efficiency technologies, including high top pressure (1.5 bar) and high-temperature hot blast systems (1,200°C), which enable greater coal injection and further energy savings. Engineering expertise from SDM of China has been instrumental in bringing this vision to life.

Through these advanced installations, Shyam Metalics reinforces its commitment to high-efficiency, sustainable steel production, signaling a transformative step for the Indian steel industry and setting new standards for operational excellence.
