The Union Cabinet has approved Phase 2(A) of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project, paving the way for the next stage of urban transit development in Gujarat. The expansion is expected to enhance connectivity between key residential, commercial, and transport hubs while improving access to Ahmedabad Airport.
The approved project comprises a 6.03-km metro corridor featuring five stations, including four elevated stations and one underground station. The route will connect important locations such as Ashram Road, Koteshwar Prachin Mandir, Sabarmati River, Sardar Nagar, and the Airport, extending the reach of the existing metro network and bringing improved public transport access to previously underserved areas.
With an estimated investment of Rs 2,169.04 crore, including interest during construction, the project forms part of a broader effort to modernise urban mobility infrastructure in the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar region. Once completed, the operational metro network across the twin cities will increase to 77.63 km.
The new corridor is expected to play a significant role in reducing dependence on private vehicles by offering a faster and more efficient transport alternative. Authorities anticipate benefits such as lower traffic congestion, shorter travel durations, enhanced road safety, and increased adoption of sustainable public transportation.
Beyond mobility improvements, the metro extension is also expected to support Ahmedabad’s long-term urban growth ambitions. Improved connectivity could strengthen the city’s readiness for major international sporting events and future infrastructure developments, further reinforcing its position as an emerging economic and urban centre.
