Caterpillar Inc is strengthening its push into intelligent and autonomous operations through a collaboration with FieldAI, aimed at advancing physical AI, robotics and autonomous technologies for construction jobsites and manufacturing facilities.
The collaboration brings together Caterpillar’s engineering expertise, industry knowledge and operational data with FieldAI’s AI-enabled robot foundation models. The companies are working to develop systems capable of operating autonomously in complex, dynamic industrial environments, with the broader objective of improving safety, productivity and operational efficiency.
The initiative comes as industries contend with labour shortages while facing increasing pressure to improve output and operational performance. By converting real-time observations from physical environments into actionable insights, physical AI can help companies strengthen decision-making, identify risks earlier and improve the utilisation of both workers and machines.

The collaboration builds on Caterpillar’s vision of the jobsite of the future, which centres on intelligent machines, connected workflows and digital insights. The company has been exploring how these technologies can create safer, more productive and easier-to-manage operations across construction and other heavy industries.
Initial applications under the collaboration include autonomous inspections, enabling improved safety and operational visibility; digital twins of jobsites and facilities, providing real-time insights into equipment, infrastructure and operations; and enhanced situational awareness, helping identify potential risks and support faster decision-making.
The companies are also exploring operational optimisation through simulation, automation and AI-driven insights, allowing operators and management teams to evaluate processes and identify opportunities for greater efficiency.

Caterpillar selected FieldAI based on the latter’s ability to deploy autonomy in complex industrial environments where conventional automation can face limitations. FieldAI’s robot-agnostic approach and foundation models are designed to process large volumes of operational and jobsite data and convert them into actionable intelligence.

The collaboration also incorporates NVIDIA accelerated computing, NVIDIA Omniverse technologies and high-fidelity digital twins built from operational data. These technologies are intended to improve visibility across physical operations, support faster decision-making and enable more sophisticated simulation and autonomous workflows.
For Caterpillar, the initiative represents another step towards integrating AI, robotics and autonomy into the construction and manufacturing ecosystem, with the focus shifting from isolated automation to intelligent systems capable of understanding and responding to changing real-world environments.
