Adani Power breaks ground on Northeast India’s largest power-generation project
Adani Power has begun construction of a 3,200-MW ultra-supercritical thermal power plant at Chapar in Assam’s Dhubri district, following the foundation-stone ceremony on 20 September. The project represents an investment of about Rs 48,000 crore and will comprise four 800-MW units, with commissioning planned in phases from December 2030.
The project is part of a wider Rs 63,000-crore power investment programme in Assam, which also includes two pumped-storage projects totalling 2,700 MW. Adani says the Chapar project could generate up to 20,000 construction-phase jobs and about 5,000 operational jobs.
The foundation has been laid; commercial generation is still several years away.
Beyond the power-generation capacity, this is a major heavy-construction and industrial-equipment opportunity for Assam and the Northeast—covering civil works, heavy lifting, turbines, boilers, electrical systems, transmission, roads and logistics.
The project’s local vendor ecosystem could create opportunities for civil contractors, equipment suppliers, transporters, fabrication companies and industrial-service providers across the Northeast.
