Energy in Motion Ltd (EIM) has inaugurated an integrated electric heavy commercial vehicle manufacturing complex at Ambi, Talegaon, Pune, bringing vehicle assembly, lithium-ion battery pack manufacturing and battery testing under one roof. The facility is aimed at strengthening the company’s capabilities in electric trucks, tractor-trailers, dumpers and other heavy-duty commercial vehicles as India advances towards cleaner freight transportation.
The complex was inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in the presence of Sharadchandra Pawar, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha), and Sunetra Ajit Pawar, Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
Developed in just over a year following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU), the Industry 4.0-enabled facility has an initial production capacity of 5,000 vehicles per shift per year. It represents the first phase of EIM’s planned investment of ₹1,000 crore in Maharashtra and is expected to generate more than 2,000 direct and indirect jobs, alongside opportunities in design, research and development (R&D), and information technology.
The integrated complex combines an electric heavy commercial vehicle assembly facility, a lithium-ion battery pack assembly factory and an independent battery testing laboratory. This structure is intended to strengthen EIM’s capabilities across vehicle manufacturing, battery technology and testing, while supporting the development of electric commercial vehicles tailored to Indian operating conditions.
Alongside manufacturing, EIM is developing a nationwide network of battery-swapping and charging infrastructure along major highways, ports and industrial complexes. Its planned megawatt-scale hubs are designed to enable battery swapping for EIM vehicles and other compatible models in less than seven minutes. The facilities will also support fast charging for vehicles equipped with a DC fast-charging socket conforming to the CCS-2 standard under applicable Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) requirements.
EIM’s technology partnerships include BAIC Foton Motor for electric heavy commercial vehicles, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL) for battery technology and Shanghai Enneagon Energy Technology Co Ltd for robotic battery-swapping systems. Foton Motor is among the major commercial vehicle manufacturers globally, while CATL is a leading battery manufacturer. Enneagon specialises in automated battery-swapping technology and has established more than 1,600 stations worldwide. These collaborations are intended to combine international technology expertise with localised manufacturing and infrastructure development in India.
Commenting on the inauguration, Narendra Murkumbi, Managing Director, EIM Ltd, said, “We are delighted to launch this integrated manufacturing and testing complex in Pune where we will build some of the largest electric vehicles that will ply on India’s roads. This facility was built in record time due to facilitation by Maharashtra govt, full support of all our technology partners, speedy execution by our hosts RMK Spaces and the round-the-clock eƯorts of EIM’s team lead by our Manufacturing head, Mahesh Keskar.
We now focus on building out a nationwide network of megawatt scale charging and battery swapping stations to enable India’s speedy transition from diesel to electric heavy goods transportation.”
With the Talegaon complex now inaugurated, EIM is positioning manufacturing and energy infrastructure as complementary components of its electric heavy commercial vehicle strategy. The development marks a step towards establishing a domestic production base for heavy-duty electric vehicles while expanding the charging and battery-swapping network required to support their wider adoption in freight and industrial transport.
