Saint-Gobain India has joined hands with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) to establish two specialised research laboratories aimed at advancing sustainable construction materials and technologies. The initiative, backed by a funding commitment of Rs 3.8 crore over three years, will focus on developing innovative solutions for India’s evolving construction and infrastructure requirements.
The laboratories will operate under IIT Madras’ Centre of Excellence on Technologies for Low-carbon and Lean Construction (TLC2), strengthening research in areas such as material efficiency, construction productivity, structural durability, sustainability and digital technologies.
The two facilities will undertake research in distinct but complementary fields. The Digital Real-Time Sensing Technologies for Infrastructure (DṚṢṬI) Laboratory will focus on developing sensing technologies to improve infrastructure monitoring and assessment. Meanwhile, the Concrete Admixture Research for Engineering Next-gen Construction (CAREN) Laboratory will concentrate on concrete admixtures and advanced construction materials, with an emphasis on improving material performance and construction practices.
A key objective of the collaboration is to bridge the gap between academic research and industrial applications. By combining IIT Madras’ research capabilities with Saint-Gobain’s industry experience, the initiative seeks to develop solutions that address the specific demands of India’s built environment. Research will also account for local climatic challenges, particularly hot and humid conditions, while exploring ways to accelerate the adoption of low-carbon materials and resource-efficient construction methods.
The partnership is expected to strengthen research in smart infrastructure, advanced building materials and sustainable construction technologies. It will also provide researchers with an opportunity to address practical industry challenges and develop solutions with potential applications across the country’s construction and infrastructure sectors.
The initiative reinforces Saint-Gobain India’s focus on promoting lightweight and sustainable construction practices. Through the three-year research programme, both institutions aim to advance indigenous technologies, improve construction efficiency and contribute to reducing the environmental footprint of buildings and infrastructure in India.
