In this interaction with Construction Business Today, Moses Eddy, Director, Kobelco Construction Equipment India Pvt Ltd, outlines how Kobelco is driving India’s earthmoving segment with smarter hydraulics, fuel-efficient machines, and strong digital integration.
How would you describe Kobelco’s current priorities as demand grows for smarter and more productive earthmoving equipment?
Kobelco’s priority is to deliver machines that combine productivity, sustainability, fuel efficiency, versatility, and long-term durability while contributing to India’s infrastructural growth. Our Lean, Clean, and Quality engineering approach has resulted in our machines clocking over 30,000 hours in the field.
At the same time, digital adoption is central to our strategy. Solutions like the K-SCAN remote monitoring system enable real-time diagnostics, geo-fencing, fuel monitoring, and fleet optimisation, helping customers operate more efficiently and minimise unplanned downtime. Our focus is to support India’s infrastructure momentum with technology-driven, reliable machinery built for Indian conditions.
What specific customer insights or buying patterns guide Kobelco’s marketing strategy for India?
Kobelco’s marketing strategy in India is guided by clear customer expectations around productivity, durability, fuel efficiency, affordability, and versatility. A key insight is the industry’s growing focus on fuel efficiency, which directly impacts profitability. Kobelco machines are engineered with advanced hydraulics, long arm and boom, superior torque, optimised cycle times, AIS (Auto Idle Stop), and Eco-mode to deliver lower fuel consumption without compromising performance. This consistently positions our products as cost-effective choices in fuel-sensitive markets.
We also leverage India’s strong emphasis on long-term reliability. Kobelco machines have clocked over 30,000 hours in the field, reinforcing customer confidence in our engineering quality and encouraging repeat purchases. Our strategy reflects the need for versatility, driven by India’s diverse construction and mining requirements. This is why our portfolio spans compact, mid-sized, and heavy-duty models suited for varied job-site conditions. After-sales service is another major differentiator. Kobelco delivers faster support, maintenance packages, workshops, and operator/mechanic training.
These factors collectively guide Kobelco’s product positioning and long-term roadmap for the Indian market.
Attachments are increasingly influencing purchasing decisions. Is Kobelco offering new attachment compatibility or quick-coupler solutions for applications like demolition, waste handling, or tunnelling?
A wide range of attachment solutions for Kobelco excavators are available for a variety of applications. This makes Kobelco’s most reliable and efficient excavators also the most versatile. Whether the requirement is in infrastructure, mining, demolition, waste handling, or quarrying and crushing, customers can choose from.
Our Amphibious attachment is ideal for the maintenance and cleaning of waterways, lakes, shorelines, ponds, swamps, and wetlands. The Telescopic Dipper helps in lifting materials and resources from deep holes and trenches, demucking, metro construction applications & foundation work, and the Electromagnet delivers strong pulling power for scrap handling, demolition, recycling, and railway or roadside clearing. The Front Shovel is suitable for tunnelling, road construction, rail projects, and irrigation canal work, and the Rock Breaker ensures high-impact performance across quarrying, mining, general construction, and demolition sites. This extensive compatibility allows customers to maximise productivity and extract more value from the same base machine, making Kobelco excavators a dependable choice for multi-application use.
What major technology or market shifts will shape the excavator segment over the next decade?
Based on current industry direction and national priorities, we see two key shifts shaping the next decade:
- Digital & Intelligent Operations
Digital tools such as IoT-based monitoring, analytics, and predictive-maintenance solutions are becoming more common, helping improve uptime, safety, and operational planning. While advanced automation is still developing, the shift toward smarter, data-led operations is clear. Kobelco’s K-SCAN remote monitoring system provides real-time diagnostics, error alerts, fuel and hours tracking, geo/time fencing, and complete fleet visibility from a single screen. Kobelco remains committed to integrating intelligent technologies that support India’s shift toward smarter, connected construction environments.
- Sustainability & Energy Efficiency
With India advancing toward cleaner technologies and long-term Net Zero goals, the demand for fuel-efficient and low-emission equipment will keep rising. Kobelco already supports this, our Sri City plant harnesses solar power which reduces CO₂ emissions by approximately 1 lakh kg per month, and we rely on rail-based logistics which results in approximately 3000 kg CO2 reduction per machine. Our machines are designed for lower fuel consumption, reduced noise, and enhanced fuel efficiency. Through our aftersales training and maintenance programs, we help operators maximize uptime and minimize fuel wastage throughout the machine’s life cycle. We also support circular economy practices by offering certified used machines through our Special Solutions division, while our CSR initiatives including tree plantation, water conservation, and waste management, reinforce our commitment to environmental responsibility.
Kobelco is aligned with these shifts, continuously integrating intelligent and sustainable technologies, and India-specific innovations to support the country’s next phase of infrastructure growth.
