In a major step towards upgrading the country’s railway infrastructure, 103 redeveloped railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme were virtually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Bikaner, Rajasthan. This large-scale rollout underscores the Centre’s commitment to modernizing the Indian Railways while enhancing passenger experience across the nation.
The newly inaugurated stations span 18 states and union territories, including major locations in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and West Bengal. These upgraded facilities are part of a phased initiative aimed at transforming over 1,300 stations into world-class transit hubs.
Backed by the Central Government, the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) is designed to offer an improved travel experience through comprehensive infrastructural development. Enhancements include modern waiting lounges, upgraded washrooms, elevators, escalators, digital signage, high-speed Wi-Fi, and inclusive amenities for differently-abled passengers.
The blueprint for each station redevelopment is uniquely crafted, keeping in mind the local requirements and regional aesthetics. Cultural motifs, local architectural styles, and artistic elements are integrated to reflect the identity and heritage of each location.
The station redevelopment movement began in 2021 with Gujarat’s Gandhinagar station leading the way. The initiative has since gathered momentum, symbolizing not just a physical transformation but also a reimagining of how railway stations function in the modern Indian transport landscape.
With this latest milestone, the Indian Railways continues its journey towards becoming a more efficient, passenger-friendly, and culturally resonant mode of transport.
