The Ahmedabad Metro is set to expand its network with a significant Rs 2,000 crore project, aimed at improving connectivity within GIFT City. The proposal, part of the metro’s Phase-2B development, includes the construction of a 6-7 km elevated circular loop designed to serve the sprawling 800-acre campus.
This ambitious plan will introduce four to six new metro stations strategically connecting commercial, residential, and public zones within GIFT City, which is home to around 28,000 employees. Currently, the Phase-2 metro line terminates at the edge of the campus, compelling most commuters to rely on private vehicles or buses for their daily travel.
The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) has submitted the proposal to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. Once the detailed project report (DPR) is finalised, the precise route, station locations, and overall project cost will be confirmed. Interestingly, this development revives a 2018 proposal that envisioned a six-km metro line with three stations within GIFT City.
The metro expansion marks a crucial step forward since the September 2024 inauguration of Phase-2, which connected Ahmedabad Metro to GIFT City. The upcoming circular loop is expected to enhance accessibility for commuters traveling from Ahmedabad, located 25 km away, and Gandhinagar, 15 km away.
Additionally, GMRC has proposed a Rs 1,800 crore project to link the Ahmedabad Metro with the city’s international airport, further boosting public transport infrastructure. Together, these projects aim to reduce dependence on private vehicles and offer seamless transit options for the region’s growing commuter base.
