Alstom delivers first metropolis metro train for Pune Metro Line 3

Alstom's delivery of the first Pune Metro Line 3 train is a key milestone in advancing sustainable urban transit in India.

Alstom has successfully delivered the first Metropolis metro train for the Pune Metro Line 3. This milestone was achieved at Alstom’s world-class manufacturing facility in Sricity, Andhra Pradesh. These trains, manufactured entirely in India, boast an operational speed of 85 km/h and are set to connect Hinjewadi’s IT hub with Shivajinagar’s central business district in Pune, the second-largest city in Maharashtra.

Olivier Loison, Managing Director, Alstom India, expressed his excitement about the project, stating, “We are thrilled to be contributing to this prestigious project by Tata Group. We are confident that our locally manufactured technologically advanced Metropolis metro trains will play a key role in enhancing the quality of life of the citizens and the overall development of the city. At Alstom, we focus on developing sustainable products and solutions that stand the test of time by operating efficiently for decades to come.”

The Pune Metro Line 3 is a ~23 km elevated metro rail project that connects the IT hub of Hinjewadi to the central business district of Shivajinagar. The project, jointly undertaken by Tata Group and Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), is based on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP). Tata Group has established Pune IT City Metro Rail Ltd as a special purpose vehicle (SPV) company to construct this corridor, which includes 23 stations.

In 2021, a joint venture was formed between Alstom India, TRIL Urban Transport Pvt Ltd (a Tata Group Company), and Siemens Project Ventures GmbH (a subsidiary of Siemens Financial Services). Under the PPP arrangement, the consortium was awarded the contract by PMRDA to provide the rolling stock, electrical, and mechanical system works for this elevated metro line. The project will be developed and operated on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate & Transfer (DBFOT) basis.

As part of this contract, Alstom is manufacturing 22 Metropolis trainsets, each comprising three cars capable of carrying 1,000 passengers per train. This project is expected to significantly enhance urban mobility and support the sustainable development goals of Pune city.
