Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) has recently inked a significant Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) with Electricité de France (EDF), a prominent French nuclear operator, to delve into opportunities that could optimize the local content of the ambitious Jaitapur Nuclear Power Plant (JNPP) project.
The MoU stands as a pivotal step for both entities as they embark on a collaborative journey to assess the potential of the JNPP, a cutting-edge light water reactor with a robust capacity of 9.6 GW. Positioned strategically in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri district, the project, facilitated by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL), is poised to cater to the electricity needs of approximately 70 million households.
In addition to their focus on the JNPP, BHEL and EDF are set to explore broader partnerships, extending their collaborative efforts to the realm of European Pressurised Reactors (EPRs) and the innovative NUWARD Small Modular Reactor (SMR). This initiative not only underscores their commitment to advancing nuclear technology but also reflects a shared vision for sustainable energy solutions on a global scale.
