The Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP), the flagship unit of the Steel Authority of India (SAIL), is set to significantly enhance its green energy initiatives. Partnering with the Chhattisgarh State Renewable Energy Development Agency (CREDA), BSP has signed a memorandum of agreement to install solar power systems across its township and grounds, aiming to produce approximately 3 MW of electricity through rooftop installations on various plant and residential buildings.
This ambitious project, led by BSP in the Durg area, is expected to generate around 34.26 million units of green power annually. The energy produced will be used as captive power by BSP, contributing to a substantial reduction in carbon emissions. It is estimated that this initiative could decrease CO2 emissions by approximately 28,330 ton each year, underscoring BSP’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint.
In addition to the rooftop solar systems, BSP has entered into a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with NTPC-SAIL Power Supply Company Ltd (NSPCL) for the establishment of a 15 MW floating solar plant in the Maroda-1 reservoir. Scheduled for completion next year, this innovative project will be the first of its kind in Chhattisgarh. The floating solar plant is also projected to produce about 34.26 million units of green power annually, further aiding BSP in its goal to lower its carbon impact and bolster renewable energy sources.
Looking ahead, BSP has also proposed the construction of a second floating solar power plant with a capacity of 35 MW in the Maroda-2 reservoir. The comprehensive project report for this phase is complete, and the bidding process is expected to commence shortly. The first phase of the solar projects is set for completion by the end of 2025, with the second phase slated to conclude by the end of 2027. The electricity generated from these projects will be integrated into the power system, benefiting both the plant and the surrounding community.
BSP’s extensive solar initiatives highlight its dedication to energy efficiency and sustainable development, setting a benchmark for the adoption of renewable energy in the industrial sector. With these projects, BSP is not only advancing its green energy goals but also contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable future for the region.
