Cabinet clears Rs 6,969-crore NH-927 project

In a significant push to infrastructure development in Uttar Pradesh, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the construction of a 4-lane access-controlled stretch of National Highway-927 between Barabanki and Bahraich. The 101.515 km project will be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM) at an estimated cost of ₹6,969.04 crore.

The project aims to address longstanding infrastructure challenges along the existing corridor, including sharp curves, substandard road geometry, and congestion in densely populated stretches across Barabanki and Bahraich districts. The upgraded highway will feature access control and continuous service roads, enabling smoother traffic flow and significantly enhancing road safety.

Once completed, the new corridor is expected to cut travel time between Barabanki and Bahraich to nearly one hour, while also improving fuel efficiency and reducing vehicle operating costs. By bypassing major habitations, the highway will ease urban congestion and provide a faster, more reliable transit route.

Strategically, the project holds considerable importance in strengthening regional and cross-border connectivity. The corridor will link multiple economic, social, and logistics nodes, while also integrating with key transport infrastructure, including the Rupaidiha Land Port near the India–Nepal border. This is expected to facilitate smoother trade flows with Nepal via the Nepalganj route, positioning the highway as a critical cross-border transit corridor.

Additionally, the project is aligned with the government’s PM GatiShakti framework, enhancing multimodal connectivity and supporting economic nodes across the region. Improved access to remote districts such as Bahraich and Shravasti is likely to spur agricultural trade, tourism, and regional investments.

Overall, the NH-927 upgrade represents a strategic infrastructure intervention aimed at unlocking economic potential, improving logistics efficiency, and reinforcing India’s cross-border trade capabilities with neighbouring Nepal.
