Dimapur Railway Station set for Rs 283 crore infrastructure upgrade

The Central Government has sanctioned an investment of Rs 283 crore for the redevelopment and modernisation of Dimapur Railway Station, a key rail hub in Nagaland that has served the region for more than a century.

The announcement was shared in the Nagaland Assembly by Health and Family Welfare Minister P Pawang Konyak, who highlighted the station’s importance within the Northeast railway network. Dimapur station currently ranks as the second-highest revenue-generating railway station in the region, underscoring its strategic role in passenger and freight movement.

Operational since 1903, the station predates the formation of Nagaland, which attained statehood in 1963. Over the decades, it has evolved into a crucial gateway linking the state with the rest of the country. However, historical land acquisition issues surrounding the station premises remain a matter of discussion between the state authorities and the railway administration.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has emphasised the need to resolve land-related concerns to facilitate smooth redevelopment of the station. Portions of the land currently used for railway infrastructure were acquired long before constitutional provisions governing land ownership came into force in the state. Landowners and the State Government are now awaiting clarity from the Ministry of Railways regarding compensation arrangements.

Once the modernisation project moves forward, the upgraded station is expected to feature improved passenger amenities, enhanced operational facilities and better connectivity. The redevelopment is also likely to reinforce Dimapur’s position as one of the most significant transportation nodes in Northeast India, supporting regional mobility and economic activity.
