In a significant move towards advancing India’s energy transition, the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) at Kandla has taken a major step in establishing itself as a Green Hydrogen hub. Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, virtually inaugurated the dispatch of electrolysers, marking a key milestone in the development of the port-operated 1 MW Green Hydrogen Plant. This initiative aligns with the objectives of the National Green Hydrogen Mission and India’s broader sustainability goals.
Advancing Green Energy at Indian Ports
The Green Hydrogen Plant at DPA Kandla is set to become the country’s first port-based hydrogen facility utilizing indigenous electrolysers. With a planned production capacity of 18 kg per hour, the plant is expected to be fully operational by mid-2025. In addition to hydrogen production, DPA has outlined ambitious expansion plans, including venturing into Green Ammonia production, further strengthening India’s clean energy capabilities.
The electrolysers, essential components for hydrogen generation, were developed by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and manufactured at its Hazira facility. Known for its expertise in the Green Hydrogen sector, L&T successfully delivered these units within a record time of three months, demonstrating its efficiency and commitment to the domestic clean energy industry.
Infrastructure and Future Expansion
With site preparations already completed at Kandla, assembly and commissioning of the electrolysers will soon commence. The Green Hydrogen produced from this facility will be utilized for clean energy generation through fuel cells, promoting self-sufficiency and sustainability in port operations.
Looking ahead, DPA Kandla aims to expand its hydrogen production capacity from 1 MW to 10 MW, reinforcing its position in India’s green energy landscape. The port’s strategic efforts will not only contribute to decarbonizing the maritime sector but also serve as a model for other ports seeking to adopt sustainable practices.
This milestone reflects India’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality and reinforces the country’s leadership in the global green energy transition. By integrating cutting-edge hydrogen technology into port operations, DPA Kandla is setting new benchmarks for sustainable and eco-friendly maritime infrastructure.
