India’s clean energy roadmap took a decisive step forward with the launch of the country’s first mega-scale green ammonia project in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. The Rs 13,000-crore facility is being developed by AM Green, a venture under the Greenko Group, and represents one of the largest green ammonia initiatives announced in the country to date.
The project was inaugurated by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu along with Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan. Spread over approximately 495 acre, the plant is designed to produce 1.5 million ton of green ammonia annually, using renewable energy sources and eliminating carbon emissions associated with conventional fossil fuel-based ammonia production.
A key aspect of the project is the brownfield conversion of an existing grey ammonia facility owned by Nagarjuna Fertilizers and Chemicals, enabling faster execution while repurposing established industrial infrastructure. Strategically located near Kakinada Port, the plant is positioned to cater predominantly to international markets, with export-focused supply agreements already in place with overseas partners.
Entirely powered by renewable energy, the facility aligns closely with India’s long-term net-zero commitments and the global push towards decarbonising industrial value chains. The development also strengthens Andhra Pradesh’s ambitions to become a hub for green hydrogen and its derivatives, with Kakinada emerging as a focal point for clean energy manufacturing and exports.
Commercial production is expected to commence in phases from 2027, reinforcing India’s growing role in the global green fuels ecosystem and marking a significant shift towards sustainable industrial development.
