GAIL and Karnataka Government Ink Pact for 1 GW Renewable Energy Projects

GAIL (India) Ltd has entered into a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Karnataka to explore the development of up to 1 Giga Watt (GW) of renewable energy capacity in the state. The agreement marks a significant step toward enhancing the state’s green energy footprint and supporting India’s broader transition to cleaner fuels.

The MoU was formalized in the presence of Karnataka’s Minister for Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure Development,  M B Patil, and Minister for Energy, K J George. Signing the agreement were Dr S Selvakumar, Principal Secretary of the Commerce & Industries Department, representing the State Government, and  Parivesh Chugh, Executive Director (SD & Renewables), on behalf of GAIL.

Under the scope of the agreement, the Government of Karnataka will extend support to GAIL in securing necessary clearances, registrations, incentives, and approvals as per existing regulations and policies. GAIL aims to implement these renewable energy projects—potentially spanning solar, wind, or hybrid formats—within a five-year timeline.

“We welcome GAIL’s strategic interest in Karnataka. This MoU reaffirms our commitment to facilitating clean energy investments while driving industrial growth. Karnataka’s policy ecosystem, skilled workforce, and land availability make it a natural partner for companies focused on sustainability,” stated  M B Patil, Minister for Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure Development, Government of Karnataka.

K J George, Minister for Energy, Government of Karnataka emphasized the collaborative potential, noting, “As a leader in renewable energy, Karnataka is pleased to collaborate with GAIL in achieving India’s clean energy transition. This partnership will strengthen our state’s position as a green energy hub and contribute to employment generation and infrastructure development.”

The initiative aligns with GAIL’s growing renewable portfolio and Karnataka’s vision to remain at the forefront of India’s clean energy movement.
