GAIL (India) Ltd has approved an investment of Rs 1,736.25 crore for the development of a 178.2 MW wind power project in Maharashtra, reinforcing its commitment to expanding renewable energy capacity and lowering its carbon footprint. The project has received clearance from the company’s board and is scheduled for completion within two years from the date of contract award.
The upcoming installation will strengthen GAIL’s existing renewable energy base, which currently comprises nearly 118 MW of wind power and 27 MW of solar capacity across states such as Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. Its operational wind assets are already located in Gujarat, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.
This investment aligns with the company’s long-term roadmap to significantly scale up its renewable energy portfolio, targeting a total capacity of 3.4 GW by 2035. Alongside wind and solar initiatives, GAIL is also pursuing opportunities in emerging clean energy segments, including green hydrogen and compressed biogas, as part of its broader sustainability agenda.
The expansion of renewable capacity forms a key component of GAIL’s decarbonisation strategy, which focuses on reducing operational emissions and supporting India’s wider transition toward cleaner energy systems.
