HPCL unveils state-of-the-art LNG terminal in Gujarat

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) has taken a significant step in bolstering India’s energy infrastructure with the commissioning of a cutting-edge liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification terminal in Chhara, Gujarat. The terminal, developed through an investment of Rs 4,750 crore by HPCL’s subsidiary, HPLNG, marks a milestone in the nation’s journey toward a cleaner energy future.

The facility, which boasts an initial capacity of five million tonnes per annum, received its first commissioning cargo in January 2025. Designed with scalability in mind, the terminal has the potential to double its capacity to 10 million ton in the future. It also features a robust storage infrastructure with two tanks offering a combined capacity of 400,000 cubic meter.

Equipped with advanced marine unloading, regasification, road tanker loading, and national gas grid connectivity, the terminal is built to handle a diverse range of operational requirements. It is set to operate under a tolling model, enabling third-party access through long-term contracts and spot agreements.

This project aligns seamlessly with India’s ambitious plan to increase natural gas usage in its energy mix from the current 7 per cent to 15 per cent by 2030. By supporting third-party access and enhancing LNG import capacity, the terminal will play a pivotal role in diversifying India’s energy portfolio and ensuring long-term energy security.

Positioned as a strategic asset, the Chhara LNG terminal underscores HPCL’s commitment to fostering sustainable energy solutions while supporting the nation’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
