In a significant stride towards sustainable energy solutions, the Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL) and the Heavy Water Board (HWB) have inked a momentous memorandum of understanding (MoU) in December 2023. This collaboration is set to pave the way for the supply of natural gas in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu.
The agreement, facilitated through the city gas distribution (CGD) system, marks a crucial development in India’s quest for self-sufficiency in meeting the demands for natural gas. A key aspect of this partnership involves an accord with SPIC Fertilisers for the supply of synthesis gas, a fundamental raw material for the heavy water plant. Notably, the synthesis gas is integral to the revival of operations at the plant, which has been dormant since 2007 owing to a breakdown in its supply chain.
The rejuvenation of the heavy water plant, scheduled to commence commissioning in June 2024, is a collaborative effort integrated with SPIC. This strategic initiative not only addresses domestic requirements but also positions India favorably for heavy water exports. The plant, operating under the aegis of the Department of Energy, employs the advanced ammonia hydrogen mono-thermal exchange process, ensuring the production of nuclear-grade heavy water.
The resumption of operations at the heavy water plant holds particular significance in the context of environmental stewardship. By leveraging heavy water supply as a catalyst, the initiative aligns with the national commitment to adopt green fuel alternatives, contributing significantly to the reduction of pollution. This transformative collaboration underscores India’s commitment to sustainable energy practices and marks a pivotal step towards a cleaner and greener future.
