Jindal Stainless exports 100 'Made in India' stainless steel freight wagons to Mozambique

Jindal Stainless has successfully supplied stainless steel to manufacture 100 custom-made freight wagons, now being exported to Mozambique. These wagons, fabricated from grade IRSM 44 stainless steel developed specifically for Indian Railways freight stock, have been shipped from Gujarat’s Deendayal Port to Mozambique’s Port of Nacala with the support of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Government of India.

The Ministry celebrated this development as a testament to India’s growing export prowess and its advancing capabilities in manufacturing and logistics.

The tippler-style wagons, each with a payload capacity of 63 MT, were designed and developed by Jindal Rail Infrastructure Ltd (JRIL), a leading freight car manufacturer in India. Known for its high-quality railway wagons supplied to Indian Railways and international markets, JRIL has leveraged its expertise to create wagons lighter than existing models. Each wagon incorporates around 4.3 ton of specially developed stainless steel from Jindal Stainless for its floor, side, and end walls.

Stainless steel was chosen over carbon steel for these wagons due to its superior corrosion resistance and inert properties, promising enhanced durability and longevity. This choice leads to a lower life cycle cost and reduced life cycle carbon emissions, making the wagons an efficient option for transporting coal, iron ore, and other goods. Out of the 100 wagons, 24 have already reached Mozambique, 26 are currently at the port, and the remaining 50 are en route.

Commenting on this achievement, Abhyuday Jindal, Managing Director, Jindal Stainless stated, “We are proud to be a part of the ‘Made in India’ story as it underscores our country’s export capabilities and commitment to becoming a global manufacturing hub. Through these indigenously manufactured stainless steel freight wagons, we are not only enhancing transportation efficiency but also showcasing India’s potential in advanced manufacturing. It will also position India as a key player in the global supply chain as we look forward to many more such achievements.”
