This initiative aligns with Kerala’s newly approved logistics park policy, which also involves the acquisition of approximately 600 hectare of land through a land pooling system. The state’s land pooling approach, aimed at easing resistance, offers tangible benefits to landowners, ensuring a smoother acquisition process. Local awareness campaigns are also underway, highlighting the positive impacts of the project, including job creation and economic development, to gain community support for the sensitive land acquisition process.
Once operational, these logistics parks will be a game-changer for businesses, streamlining the transportation of goods through the Vizhinjam port. Road and rail connectivity will bolster the initiative, including a proposed rail link between the port and the Balaramapuram railway station. Additionally, a 629 km coastal highway from Vizhinjam to Kasaragod is in the pipeline, with the Vizhinjam-Kazhakootam section being developed as a logistics corridor.
Currently, the Vizhinjam port functions primarily as a ship-to-ship transshipment hub, where large vessels offload cargo to smaller ships for distribution to other ports across India. The development of these logistics parks and infrastructure projects is expected to accelerate economic growth in the region and make the port a key player in the global shipping industry.
