The Kerala Maritime Board (KMB) has taken a strategic step forward by submitting a proposal to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, aiming to construct a multi-purpose berth at Ponnani Port. This key non-major port, which falls under the Kerala State Government’s jurisdiction, is set to benefit from a Rs 20 crore project, with the KMB seeking partial funding through the Central Government’s Sagarmala Scheme.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal recently highlighted this initiative in a written reply to the Lok Sabha, pointing to the Central Government’s continued support for projects that advance state-led maritime development in line with national policies.
Ponnani Port, located in Malappuram district, is more than just a gateway to the sea; it’s a critical hub for regional connectivity and economic momentum. Recognizing its potential to boost cruise tourism and regional economic activity, the Kerala Government is pushing forward with plans to further develop the port. This ambitious project is poised to operate under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, ensuring robust involvement from private sector players.
In pursuit of this goal, the state has issued an Expression of Interest (EoI) to attract private service providers interested in kick-starting cruise shipping services. These services aim to create a vibrant network connecting various non-major ports within Kerala and linking them with ports in neighbouring states.
This proposal dovetails with the broader Sagarmala Scheme’s vision, which focuses on the modernization of India’s ports, enhanced connectivity, and fostering port-led economic development. The Kerala Government’s initiative is a forward-looking move to upgrade the state’s maritime infrastructure, invigorate tourism, and stimulate economic growth.
Should the project receive approval, it would signify a major advancement in Kerala’s maritime development efforts, bolstering both the state’s economic prospects and the overarching goals of the Sagarmala Scheme.
