Maharashtra explores floating solar across Krishna and Godavari basins

Maharashtra is moving to deploy floating solar power projects on dams located across the Krishna River and Godavari River basins, signalling a stronger push toward renewable energy generation alongside environmental conservation.

The initiative, outlined at a sectoral seminar in Pune, focuses on utilising existing reservoirs to produce clean electricity, thereby avoiding the challenges associated with land acquisition. The water resources department is advancing the programme in line with directions from Devendra Fadnavis to actively pursue floating solar installations as part of the state’s broader energy transition.

Led by the department under Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, the plan is expected to enhance Maharashtra’s green energy portfolio while aligning infrastructure development with sustainability goals. Floating solar plants offer multiple advantages for a densely populated state, enabling renewable power generation without competing for land resources.

Beyond electricity production, the projects are expected to deliver ancillary benefits, including reduced water evaporation from reservoirs and improved solar panel performance due to the natural cooling effect of water. The initiative is also positioned to support agricultural communities by strengthening local power availability, reinforcing the state’s effort to integrate clean energy solutions with rural and environmental priorities.
