Nashik’s Ozar Airport cleared for Rs 556 crore expansion ahead of Simhastha Kumbh Mela

Nashik’s Ozar Airport is set for a major upgrade as Maharashtra prepares for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela, with the Kumbh Mela Development Authority approving an expansion plan valued at Rs 556 crore. The project aims to significantly enhance passenger-handling capacity and overall infrastructure to manage the large influx of visitors expected between 2026 and 2028.

The development programme features a new integrated terminal building along with upgraded supporting facilities. Once completed, the airport’s handling capacity will rise from the current 300 passengers per hour to nearly 1,000 passengers per hour. The plan also includes a larger aircraft apron, expanded vehicular parking areas, and improved internal circulation systems to accommodate increased air traffic during the religious congregation.

The Maharashtra Government will formalise the project through a memorandum of understanding with Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, which manages operations at the airport. With the Kumbh Mela scheduled to span from October 2026 to July 2028, authorities have set March 2027 as the deadline for completing all airport-related works, ensuring adequate readiness well before the peak movement of pilgrims.

The airport expansion forms part of a wider infrastructure push underway across the Nashik and Trimbakeshwar regions. Alongside aviation upgrades, the state is advancing road improvements, additional connectivity links, and civic enhancements to support crowd movement and public services during the event.

The project is expected to strengthen Nashik’s long-term connectivity profile while supporting economic activity in the region beyond the Kumbh Mela period.
