Paradip Port to get Rs 797 crore green hydrogen jetty

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has cleared the development of a dedicated jetty at Paradip Port for handling green hydrogen, ammonia and other liquid cargo. The project, estimated at Rs 797.17 crore, will be executed by the Paradip Port Authority under the build-operate-transfer model.

The upcoming facility is planned with an annual handling capacity of 4.0 million ton and is expected to position Paradip as a key maritime hub for green energy cargo on the eastern coast. The scope of work includes construction of a specialised jetty, storage infrastructure, pipelines, cargo handling systems and other supporting facilities required for safe and efficient operations.

As part of the project structure, Paradip Port Authority will contribute viability gap funding equivalent to 20 per cent of the total project cost, amounting to Rs 159.43 crore, during the construction phase. The development timeline has been set at 24 months.

From an engineering standpoint, the jetty will feature a centre-to-centre spacing of 279 m between the extreme end dolphins, along with a dredged depth of 14.3 m at the berth. This configuration will allow the port to accommodate liquid cargo vessels safely and efficiently.

The project forms part of the broader national push to establish robust infrastructure for green hydrogen production, storage and export. By enabling dedicated handling of hydrogen derivatives such as ammonia, the facility will help connect upcoming green hydrogen production clusters in Odisha with international markets.

In addition to green cargo, the jetty will be equipped to handle other liquid commodities, ensuring operational viability and cargo flexibility during the early stages of green hydrogen scale-up. This approach is expected to strengthen Paradip Port’s cargo diversification strategy while enhancing its long-term revenue potential.

The development also aligns with the objectives of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to make India a global hub for production, utilisation and export of clean hydrogen. The new infrastructure is likely to attract investments in associated industries, create employment opportunities and support the growth of a green energy ecosystem around the port.

Once completed, the facility will add specialised capabilities and modern safety systems required for handling sensitive and high-value green energy cargo, reinforcing Paradip Port’s role in supporting India’s transition towards sustainable and future-ready maritime logistics.
