Reliance and DP World introduce rail-based logistics solution for efficiency and sustainability

DP World and Reliance Industries have introduced an innovative rail-based transportation solution that replaces long-distance road transport, significantly cutting carbon emissions while streamlining operations.

This transformative initiative shifts the movement of petrochemical products from Reliance Industries’ Jamnagar facility in Gujarat to DP World’s inland container depot (ICD) in Ahmedabad and onwards to Mundra port—entirely via rail. Previously, each container covered approximately 700km on road in the Mundra-Jamnagar-Mundra loop. Now, with rail replacing road on the Ahmedabad-Jamnagar-Mundra stretch, the same 700km journey is executed with greater efficiency and sustainability.

By leveraging DP World’s integrated rail service, Reliance can now transport up to 1,260 ton of cargo in a single movement, consolidating 45 containers at once. This eliminates the need for multiple trailers and drivers, cutting down transportation costs while ensuring seamless vessel connectivity for timely exports. More importantly, it eliminates over 700km of road transport per container, aligning with Reliance’s aggressive environmental goals.

Ganesh Raj, Global Chief Operating Officer, DP World Marine Services, highlighted the significance of the move:

“This service exemplifies DP World’s ability to solve complex logistics challenges for leading companies like Reliance Industries. By leveraging our multimodal assets and expertise, we have delivered a tailored, cost-effective alternative to road transport that enhances supply chain reliability, streamlines operations, and reduces environmental impact. This innovative approach not only aligns with Reliance’s sustainability commitments but also ensures greater efficiency, seamless coordination, and timely exports to support their growing operational demands.”

This initiative is an extension of Reliance Industries’ long-standing collaboration with Unifeeder, a DP World company that serves as Reliance’s primary logistics service provider. By integrating DP World’s rail services with the Ahmedabad ICD, Unifeeder ensures smooth operations for Reliance, with plans for further capacity expansion and greater flexibility to accommodate the company’s growing logistics needs.

Ravikumar Nair, Head SCM Operations, Reliance Industries Ltd – Petchem, emphasized the impact of the shift:

“DP World’s innovative approach has provided us with a logistics solution that addresses critical operational needs while advancing our sustainability objectives. The shift from road to rail has streamlined our operations, reduced carbon emissions, reduced road exposure by eliminating 45 road trailer movement, and reinforced our commitment to responsible and efficient supply chain practices.”

The newly introduced coastal-rail integrated service is part of DP World’s larger vision to provide sustainable and resilient supply chain solutions. With growing emphasis on decarbonization and multimodal logistics, this model is likely to inspire similar transitions across industries.

Adhendru Jain, Vice President of Rail and Inland Terminals, DP World Subcontinent, reinforced this vision:

“We are committed to providing customers with integrated solutions that make supply chains resilient and sustainable. The newly flagged coastal-rail integrated service not only fulfils Reliance Industries’ efficiency requirements but also ensures sustainable cargo movement. We are confident that this multimodal solution will drive significant value for Reliance Industries and inspire more businesses to adopt a multimodal approach towards making their supply chains agile, reliable, and sustainable.”

As industries across the globe look to reduce their carbon footprint, Reliance and DP World’s initiative stands as a benchmark for sustainable logistics—where efficiency and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.
