SJVN Ltd has advanced the development of its 382 MW Sunni Dam Hydro Electric Project by awarding a major contract for Electro-Mechanical (E&M) works to Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. The contract, valued at Rs 837.43 crore, represents a critical step in the execution of the hydropower project.
The agreement was executed in the presence of senior officials from both organizations. The contract was signed on behalf of SJVN by its Executive Director (ECD), while BHEL was represented by its Senior Deputy General Manager, reflecting the strategic importance of the package for both entities. The E&M contract encompasses the supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of electro-mechanical equipment for the project. These works are scheduled to be completed in line with the overall commissioning timeline, which is targeted for July 31, 2029.
Civil and Hydro-Mechanical works for the Sunni Dam Hydro Electric Project, awarded earlier, are already under active execution. With the award of the E&M package, all major components of the project have now moved into implementation, enabling integrated progress across construction and installation phases.
The Sunni Dam project is a run-of-the-river hydroelectric scheme with diurnal storage, located on the Satluj River in the Shimla and Kullu districts of Himachal Pradesh. The dam-toe surface powerhouse is designed to deliver an estimated annual energy generation of approximately 1,381.77 million units once operational.
Upon commissioning, the project is expected to make a substantial contribution to India’s renewable energy portfolio. The addition of clean hydropower capacity from the Sunni Dam HEP will strengthen grid stability, enhance energy security, and support the country’s long-term sustainability and climate objectives.
