India has taken a significant step forward in strengthening its aerospace manufacturing capabilities with the establishment of the country’s first private-sector helicopter Final Assembly Line. Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL) has set up the new facility at its Vemagal campus in Karnataka to assemble the Airbus H125 helicopter, marking a milestone in indigenous aerospace production.
The inauguration, held virtually and attended by senior government representatives from India and France along with top industry leadership, underscores the growing strategic cooperation between the two countries in aviation and defence manufacturing. The facility represents a major shift in India’s aviation ecosystem, as it enables a private domestic company to undertake the complete assembly, integration, testing, and lifecycle support of a modern helicopter platform within the country.
The Vemagal plant will initially focus on producing the civil version of the Airbus H125, a globally recognised single-engine helicopter widely deployed for emergency medical services, law enforcement, disaster response, and tourism operations. The facility also holds the potential to assemble the H125M military variant in the future, which can be deployed for reconnaissance, high-altitude logistics, and search-and-rescue roles.
Local manufacturing is expected to enhance operational readiness and service availability for Indian operators while supporting regional connectivity initiatives such as UDAN. The programme is also positioned to contribute to export opportunities, strengthening India’s role as a regional aerospace production hub. The first helicopter assembled at the facility is expected to be delivered by early 2027.
The H125 platform has earned global recognition for its reliability and performance, particularly in challenging environments. Its capability has been demonstrated in extreme conditions, including operations at the summit of Mount Everest, highlighting its suitability for demanding missions.
This development marks another major collaboration between Tata Advanced Systems and Airbus, following their ongoing work on the C295 military transport aircraft assembly line in India. The partnership reflects the broader objective of building domestic aerospace capabilities, enhancing technological expertise, and advancing India’s position in the global aviation manufacturing landscape.
Airbus continues to expand its presence in India through initiatives that align with efficiency, safety, and sustainability goals, covering commercial aviation, defence, and space systems. The new helicopter assembly line reinforces India’s ambitions to emerge as a key player in advanced aerospace manufacturing.
