Tata Steel has commissioned India’s largest blast furnace at its Kalinganagar facility in Odisha. With a total investment of Rs 27,000 crore, the Phase II expansion at Kalinganagar has increased the plant’s total capacity from 3 million ton per annum (MTPA) to 8 MTPA. The new facility, inaugurated by T V Narendran, CEO and Managing Director, Tata Steel, will significantly boost the company’s production capabilities, catering to key sectors such as automotive, infrastructure, power, shipbuilding, defence, oil & gas, and construction.
The expansion marks Odisha as the largest investment destination for Tata Steel, with the company investing over Rs 100,000 crore in the state over the past decade. The newly commissioned blast furnace, with a volume of 5,870 m3, is equipped with cutting-edge features aimed at optimising steel production, including India’s first top combustion stoves and a dry gas cleaning plant for energy recovery.

The Kalinganagar plant continues to be a key contributor to the socio-economic development of the region, positively impacting over 2 lakh people through community development programs. Tata Steel Kalinganagar is also notable for being the first Indian manufacturing plant to be named a Global Lighthouse by the World Economic Forum and for receiving the prestigious ResponsibleSteelTM Certification for its sustainability efforts.
