Tata Steel has officially commissioned the expanded phase of its state-of-the-art steel manufacturing facility at Kalinganagar in Jajpur district, Odisha, enhancing its crude steel production capacity from 3 million ton per annum (MTPA) to 8 MTPA. The inauguration ceremony was presided over by the Chief Minister of Odisha, Mohan Charan Majhi, in the presence of senior government dignitaries, community representatives, and the company’s leadership team.
Also present at the occasion were Pradeep Bal Samanta, Minister for Co-operation, Handlooms, Textiles & Handicrafts, Government of Odisha; Sampad Chandra Swain, Minister for Industries, Skill Development & Technical Education, Government of Odisha; and Dr Rabindra Narayan Behera, Member of Parliament, Jajpur.
The commissioning of the expanded facility signifies a major milestone in Tata Steel’s long-term strategic vision of building a sustainable, technology-driven, and globally competitive steel manufacturing ecosystem in India. With an investment of Rs 27,000 crore, this expansion constitutes one of the largest investments by the company in a single location and reinforces Odisha’s position as a key destination for industrial growth.
Speaking on the occasion, T V Narendran, CEO and Managing Director, Tata Steel, stated:
“Kalinganagar is more than a manufacturing site for us. It symbolises what is possible when communities, government, and industry work together. This expansion reflects our deep belief in Odisha’s potential and our long-term commitment to this State. We are thankful to the Chief Minister, the people of Odisha, and the Government of India, for their continued support. Together, we are building not just steel, but a stronger, self-reliant India.”
The Phase II expansion project includes the commissioning of a new blast furnace—the largest in India with a volume of 5,870 cubic m—equipped with four top combustion stoves and two preheating stoves, aimed at enhancing fuel efficiency and operational longevity. Additional installations under this phase include a Pellet Plant, Coke Plant, and a Cold Rolling Mill, all incorporating advanced technologies and environmentally responsible practices.
The upgraded facility will produce high-grade, advanced steel to cater to critical sectors such as defence, automotive, infrastructure, engineering, capital goods, oil & gas, renewable energy, and shipbuilding. Tata Steel Kalinganagar continues to contribute significantly to the Government of India’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat by enabling domestic production of world-class materials for strategic and industrial applications.
With this expansion, Tata Steel further consolidates its presence in Odisha, reaffirming its role as a key enabler of industrial development and economic progress in the region.
