TKIL Industries has entered into an exclusive strategic partnership with Germany-based HOPPECKE Batterien GmbH & Co to co-develop innovative battery systems for the Indian rail sector. This alliance aims to power a new generation of energy-efficient solutions for metro systems, regional trains, and locomotives across the country.
With India’s electric locomotive capacity expected to double by 2030 and the number of metro-operational cities projected to rise from 23 in FY25 to 31 in FY30, the partnership comes at a critical juncture. The country is witnessing rapid growth in clean transportation, with around 900 km of metro rail projects underway and supported by investments estimated at Rs 600 crore.
The collaboration combines TKIL Industries’ deep expertise in engineering, manufacturing, and project execution with HOPPECKE’s decades-long legacy in industrial energy storage technologies. The first joint project under this partnership is set to be rolled out in 2025, and TKIL has already secured its first order as part of this engagement.
“We are honoured to partner with HOPPECKE, marking a strategic milestone in our journey to support India’s transition to sustainable rail transport,” said Vivek Bhatia, Managing Director and CEO, TKIL Industries. “HOPPECKE brings decades of technological expertise in energy storage solutions, while TKIL Industries specialises in delivering large-scale infrastructure across India. Together, we aim to play a pivotal role in accelerating the electrification of the Indian rail market—combining innovation, execution capability, and a shared vision for a greener future.”
Dr Marc Zoellner, CEO, HOPPECKE Batterien GmbH & Co, commented, “India is a strategically important growth market for sustainable mobility solutions. This alliance with a respected partner like TKIL Industries marks a significant step forward in delivering meaningful value to India’s railway sector through our advanced battery systems.”
Sachin Jain, Head – Battery, TKIL Industries, added, “Our collaboration with HOPPECKE is a major step toward redefining how energy is stored and delivered in rail transport. Together, we will offer next-generation battery systems that meet the evolving needs of India’s railway operators—solutions that are smarter, more efficient, and built for sustainability.”
The alliance also forms part of TKIL Industries’ broader sustainability roadmap, which has seen the company expand into emerging green technologies such as Green Hydrogen and Compressed Biogas (CBG). With Battery and Energy Storage (BES) now becoming a key focus area, the company is reinforcing its commitment to supporting India’s net zero ambition and strengthening its role in the nation’s clean energy transition.
