Torrent commissions Uttar Pradesh’s first Green Hydrogen plant in Gorakhpur

Torrent Group has taken a significant stride in India’s clean energy transition with the commissioning of its Green Hydrogen facility in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. The plant was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, and represents the first Green Hydrogen project in the state as well as the largest hydrogen blending initiative within India’s City Gas Distribution (CGD) sector.

Developed by Torrent Power in collaboration with Torrent Gas, the facility is designed to produce 72 ton of Green Hydrogen annually. This hydrogen will be blended with natural gas—up to 2 per cent concentration—and supplied through Torrent Gas’ existing CGD pipeline network. The blended fuel is set to reach households, industries, and CNG stations across Gorakhpur, bringing cleaner energy solutions directly into daily use.

Torrent Gas already operates 32 CNG stations in the region, along with piped natural gas supply to more than 12,000 homes and over 70 industries in Gorakhpur, Sant Kabirnagar, and Kushinagar. The addition of Green Hydrogen into its network marks a milestone in advancing sustainable energy distribution using existing infrastructure.

By integrating Green Hydrogen into its CGD operations, Torrent is not only lowering carbon emissions but also building early-scale demand for green molecules, setting the foundation for wider adoption of hydrogen in India’s energy system. The project reflects the company’s commitment to driving innovation and contributing to the country’s long-term net-zero ambitions.
