TRSL Launches Forged Wheel Unit with Ramkrishna Forgings

Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd (TRSL) has expanded its manufacturing footprint by stepping into the forged wheel segment through a joint venture with Ramkrishna Forgings. The move is a direct response to the persistent shortage of wheelsets that has disrupted train and coach production in recent quarters, causing delays and hampering monthly output targets.

This strategic foray aligns closely with the Government of India’s push for self-reliance under the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ mission. By localising the production of forged wheels—an essential component in rolling stock—TRSL aims to reduce dependence on imports and mitigate future supply chain challenges.

The shortage of wheelsets, particularly from the Rail Wheel Factory in Bangalore, has been a critical bottleneck in meeting the company’s target of manufacturing 950 to 1,000 wagons each month. The designated supplier under railway board contracts has struggled to keep pace with the growing demand, prompting players like TRSL to take control of key component production.

With the forged wheel production line set to stabilise from June, this new business vertical is expected to strengthen TRSL’s operational resilience. Beyond addressing immediate supply constraints, the move is poised to fortify India’s broader railway manufacturing ecosystem by enhancing domestic capabilities in a critical yet previously import-dependent area.
