In response to the increasing demand for eco-friendly transport solutions, Volvo Trucks introduces upgraded versions of its electric medium duty trucks, the Volvo FL and FE. These trucks are designed to cater to diverse city applications such as distribution, refuse handling, and urban construction, aligning with the growing trend of clean city zones and corporate sustainability initiatives.
The electric variants of the Volvo FL and FE, launched in 2019, have gained traction in multiple markets spanning Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Australia. The recent upgrades focus on enhancing charging capabilities, safety features, and overall functionality, making them more appealing for businesses prioritizing sustainability.
Jessica Sandström, Head of Product Management at Volvo Trucks, emphasizes the company’s commitment to providing market-leading electric trucks: “Volvo Trucks has a market-leading offer of electric trucks – and we are constantly improving them to enable more businesses to take the step to zero emission vehicles for their daily operations.”
Key updates to the Volvo FL and FE models include a significant increase in AC charging capacity to 43 kW, reducing charging time by approximately 50 per cent. The upgraded battery packs now offer an extended range of up to 450 km on a single charge. These enhancements aim to address the practical needs of businesses relying on medium duty trucks for their daily operations.
Safety remains a top priority, with the Volvo FL and FE models exceeding the General Safety Regulations set to take effect in 2024. The trucks incorporate advanced safety features such as Vulnerable Road User Detection, Side Collision Avoidance Support, and Driver Alert Support. These additions ensure the safety of both drivers and other road users in the bustling urban environment where these trucks operate.
Aesthetic updates accompany the functional improvements, with a redesigned front end, distinctive LED headlights, and an enhanced iron mark contributing to a refreshed appearance. The exterior mirrors have been slimmed down to provide better direct visibility, enhancing the driver’s awareness of the surroundings.
Additional features include new LED lights in the interior, a lockable storage space to improve the working environment, and a 360˚ bird’s eye view camera solution or side view camera options for enhanced visibility. The new key fob introduces user-friendly functions, and the electric version boasts a new electric power take-off interface, simplifying body building and saving weight.
Volvo Trucks aims to offer a comprehensive range of powertrain variants, including electric, gas, and diesel options, ensuring that businesses have diverse and efficient choices to meet their specific urban transport needs. The commitment to continuous improvement reflects Volvo Trucks’ dedication to supporting businesses with sustainability at the forefront of their operations.
