ZF Group has expanded its manufacturing footprint in India with the inauguration of its 19th plant, located in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Developed with an investment of €20 million (approximately Rs 192 crore), the facility spans 10,000 sq m and is designed to cater to the construction equipment and railway sectors.
This new facility marks a strategic move under ZF’s broader ‘Make in India for India and the World’ initiative, aimed at bolstering domestic production capabilities while supporting global supply chains. It becomes the company’s 11th production unit in Tamil Nadu and is positioned to serve both local and international markets.
Among the key technologies to be manufactured at the Coimbatore plant are the ERGOPOWER M transmissions, tailored specifically for construction machinery. These advanced transmissions are integrated with automatic powershift technology, engineered to enhance machine performance and reduce fuel consumption by up to 15 per cent. This aligns with evolving industry needs for higher productivity and cost-efficiency on construction sites.
The plant will also produce MULTITRAC axles, intended for heavy-duty construction applications. Known for their compact and lightweight structure, these axles deliver high torque capacity and robust structural strength. They feature wheel speed wet multi-disc brakes to minimize braking losses and optimize operational efficiency. Various configurations are available in terms of gear ratios, brake types, and differential lock options, making them suitable for diverse usage scenarios.
In addition to serving the construction industry, the Coimbatore facility will support India’s growing metro network by manufacturing EcoMet transmissions. These gearboxes, designed with a modular architecture, allow seamless integration into various metro rail systems, eliminating the need for additional development. Their adaptability contributes to cost efficiency and ease of maintenance, which is vital for the nation’s expanding public transportation infrastructure.
The launch of this facility further consolidates ZF Group’s position as a key contributor to India’s industrial growth. By localizing production and advancing high-performance technologies, the company aims to support the increasing demand in both construction and urban mobility sectors, reinforcing India’s role as a global manufacturing hub.
