PM Modi unveils major infrastructure projects in Mumbai worth over Rs 29,400 crore

PM Modi's ambitious infrastructure initiatives are set to transform Mumbai into a major global financial and logistics hub.

Mumbai saw a surge in infrastructure development as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation for several key projects totalling over Rs 29,400 crore. Among the notable initiatives is the twin tunnel construction for the Goregaon Mulund Link Road (GMLR) Project, a significant endeavour valued at over Rs 6,300 crore.

The GMLR Project is poised to enhance road connectivity by linking the Western Express Highway at Goregaon with the Eastern Express Highway at Mulund. Stretching approximately 6.65 km, this link aims to provide direct access from the Western suburbs to the proposed Navi Mumbai airport and the Pune-Mumbai Expressway. This marked PM Modi’s first visit to Mumbai since his re-election on June 9.

Additionally, PM Modi laid the foundation for the Kalyan yard remodelling and the Gati Shakti Multi-Modal Cargo Terminal at Turbhe in Navi Mumbai. The Kalyan yard remodelling aims to separate long-distance and suburban traffic, thereby increasing the yard’s capacity to handle more trains, reducing congestion, and improving operational efficiency. The Gati Shakti Multi-Modal Cargo Terminal, spanning over 32,600 sq m, is set to create employment opportunities for local residents and facilitate the handling of cement and other commodities.

The Prime Minister also inaugurated new platforms at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and extended Platforms No 10 and 11 at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus Station. These new platforms at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus are designed to accommodate longer trains, boosting the station’s capacity to manage more passengers. The platforms have been extended by 382 m and are equipped with a cover shed and washable apron, enabling the operation of trains with up to 24 coaches, thus enhancing passenger capacity.

Moreover, PM Modi launched the Mukhyamantri Yuva Karya Prashikshan Yojana, an ambitious internship program with an investment of around Rs 5,600 crore, aimed at transforming the youth employment landscape in the region.
