The Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) has embraced electric cargo handling equipment, reinforcing India’s commitment to clean energy solutions. Aligning with the Union Budget 2025-26 and the nation’s sustainability objectives, DPA has facilitated the deployment of four SDLG L956HEV electric wheel loaders, marking a pivotal shift in its operational strategy.
This initiative aligns with the ‘Harit Sagar’ Green Port Guidelines, which advocate for carbon footprint reduction and increased reliance on renewable energy. The adoption of electric wheel loaders is expected to lower emissions, enhance air quality, and decrease noise pollution in the port environment. Additionally, the transition from diesel-powered equipment to electric alternatives is set to cut operational costs, as electric loaders require less maintenance and have lower energy consumption.
To support this transition, DPA has also established an electric vehicle (EV) charging station within the dock area, ensuring efficient operations and encouraging the adoption of sustainable cargo handling practices. Furthering its green agenda, the port is actively working on implementing Shore Power Supply (Cold Ironing), allowing ships to utilize shore-based electricity instead of fuel-based generators while docked, thereby reducing emissions.
DPA has been progressively integrating eco-friendly measures across its infrastructure. Investments in renewable energy, including solar and wind projects, are being expanded to reduce reliance on conventional power sources. Waste and water management initiatives, including rainwater harvesting and recycling programs, are also being strengthened to minimize environmental impact.
The introduction of electric wheel loaders is expected to bring significant environmental benefits. Estimates suggest that the shift could lead to an annual reduction of approximately 560 ton of carbon emissions. The elimination of diesel-powered equipment further contributes to improved air quality by reducing particulate matter and nitrogen oxide emissions, both of which have adverse effects on health and the environment.
By fostering clean technology adoption in maritime logistics, DPA is setting a benchmark for sustainable port operations in India. The port remains committed to integrating energy-efficient solutions and pioneering green initiatives that align with global sustainability standards. With continued investments in electrification, renewable energy, and environmental conservation, DPA is leading the way towards a more sustainable and resilient maritime sector.
