Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) has been awarded a Letter of Award (LOA) by Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd (UPPCL) to develop a 1,250 MW pumped hydro storage capacity in the state. The energy storage initiative, known as the Panaura PSP project, will be located in Sonbhadra district and is designed for a minimum operational lifespan of 40 years. The project is expected to be completed within the next six years.
With a vision to expand its footprint in the energy storage sector, AGEL aims to develop over 5 GW of pumped hydro storage capacity by the end of the decade. The company is already progressing on multiple hydro PSP developments, including a 500 MW project at the Chitravathi River in Andhra Pradesh, a 1,500 MW facility at Tarali in Maharashtra, and an 1,800 MW installation at Gandikota in Andhra Pradesh.
Hydropower-based energy storage solutions are recognized for their cost efficiency, scalability, and reliability. These projects utilize surplus solar energy during the day to pump water to higher elevations, which is then released at night to generate electricity, balancing peak demand periods. The technology enhances grid stability, supports frequency regulation, and ensures energy availability with reserve generation capabilities.
AGEL, a key player in India’s renewable energy sector, is focused on accelerating the nation’s transition towards sustainable power solutions. As part of the Adani Group, the company has taken significant strides in developing large-scale solar and wind energy projects.
With an ambitious target of achieving 45 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, AGEL continues to expand its portfolio through innovative hybrid projects that integrate solar and wind power. Leveraging advanced technology and strategic collaborations, the company is strengthening its operational efficiency while reinforcing India’s commitment to clean energy.
