India and Singapore strengthen maritime ties with digital and green shipping initiative

India and Singapore have taken a significant step towards enhancing maritime sustainability by signing a letter of intent (LoI) focused on digitalisation and decarbonisation in the sector. The agreement, formalised between India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, marks the beginning of a collaborative effort to drive innovation and environmental responsibility in shipping.

The initiative aims to identify key industry stakeholders who can contribute to advancing green and digital shipping solutions. Both nations are working towards solidifying this partnership through a future memorandum of understanding (MoU) that will establish an India-Singapore Green and Digital Shipping Corridor (GDSC).

India, with its strong foundation in information technology and growing potential in green marine fuel production, is well-positioned to support this initiative. Singapore, as a global maritime hub, brings expertise in transshipment, bunkering, and research-driven innovation. The planned corridor is expected to boost cooperation between the two nations, accelerating the adoption of low-emission technologies and digital advancements within the maritime sector.

By leveraging their respective strengths, India and Singapore aim to create a sustainable and technologically advanced shipping corridor that aligns with global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve operational efficiency in maritime transport.
