JSW Steel strengthens sustainability drive with investment in green steel capacity

JSW Steel is set to make a significant stride in sustainable steel manufacturing by investing approximately Rs 50,000–60,000 crore over the next three to four years to develop 10 million ton per annum (MTPA) of green steel capacity. The upcoming capacity expansion will be undertaken near Mumbai as part of a brownfield development at its existing Salav facility in Raigad district, Maharashtra. The strategic move aligns with the increasing global emphasis on environmentally responsible steel production, particularly in response to evolving European regulatory frameworks that promote the use of green steel. JSW Steel has already outlined a phased plan to scale the Salav unit’s green steel capacity to 4 MTPA, and this new investment marks a substantial acceleration of its sustainability roadmap.

The expansion is a key element in the company’s long-term vision of becoming the world’s largest steel producer. From its current installed capacity of 34.2 MTPA, JSW Steel aims to reach 100 MTPA in the coming years, reinforcing its commitment to both growth and environmental stewardship.

In parallel, India’s steel sector continues to witness strong domestic demand growth in the range of 10–12 per cent annually. To meet this rising demand, the country requires an estimated addition of 20 MTPA capacity each year, translating into an annual investment need of approximately US$ 20 billion. Recognizing these dynamics, the Indian Government is working towards implementing safeguard duties to protect domestic producers from global market pressures.

Further supporting its green transformation, JSW Steel is exploring opportunities in battery cell manufacturing using advanced technologies from China and South Korea. This initiative underscores the company’s integrated approach to sustainable industrial development and energy-efficient innovation.
