Deendayal Port launches nation’s first Make-in-India Green Hydrogen Plant

Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), Kandla, has successfully commissioned the country’s first Make-in-India 1 MW Green Hydrogen Plant, establishing a key milestone in India’s journey toward sustainable maritime infrastructure.

Developed under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, the facility marks a major step in India’s decarbonization strategy and aligns with the goals outlined in the Maritime India Vision 2030. The new plant is part of a larger 10 MW green hydrogen project whose foundation was laid just four months ago. With the first module now operational, DPA sets a new benchmark in project delivery and execution speed in the green hydrogen sector.

Capable of producing approximately 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen per year, the facility is designed and built entirely by Indian engineers under the Make-in-India initiative. Engineering conglomerate Larsen & Toubro (L&T) played a pivotal role in the plant’s design, engineering, and execution.

This development positions DPA as the first port in India to host a Megawatt-scale green hydrogen plant, demonstrating strong commitment to clean energy integration in port operations. It also reinforces India’s growing leadership in green shipping and port sustainability.

The commissioning builds on the port’s previous green achievements, such as deploying the country’s first Make-in-India all-electric green tug. With the hydrogen plant now online, DPA strengthens its position as a national example of innovation, efficiency, and environmentally responsible development in the maritime sector.

This new facility is seen as the foundation for transforming Kandla into a future green hydrogen hub, supporting broader national ambitions of achieving net-zero emissions and boosting self-reliance in clean energy technology across industrial sectors.
