Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is gearing up for a major transformation under its ambitious Project Anantha, with the first phase of airside development worth Rs 600 crore set to roll out in the coming weeks.
The contract, executed by ITD Cementation India with ULCCS as subcontractor, will cover reconstruction of the Terminal 2 apron and a complete overhaul of the airport’s drainage system to withstand heavy monsoons. Passenger facilities are also being strengthened with additional check-in counters at Terminal 1 and the creation of a new knowledge centre. Critical operational infrastructure, including air traffic control buildings, aircraft hangars, and rescue facilities, forms part of the upcoming works.
Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL), the operator of the airport, has outlined a Rs 1,300 crore investment programme aimed at boosting annual passenger handling capacity from 3.2 million to nearly 12 million. Part of the funding has been secured from US$ 750 million raised through external commercial borrowings, earmarked for modernisation across six airports under AAHL’s management.
While airside activities are advancing, several city-side components of the project remain on hold. Plans for a multi-level underground parking facility and a five-star hotel are awaiting environmental clearance, with the revised master plan currently under review by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change.
