The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the construction of a 4-lane greenfield access-controlled Mokama–Munger section of the Buxar–Bhagalpur High-Speed Corridor in Bihar. The project will be executed on Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM) with a total length of 82.40 km and an estimated capital cost of Rs 4,447.38 crore.
The alignment will provide seamless connectivity to key regional centres including Mokama, Barahiya, Lakhisarai, Jamalpur, and Munger, further extending to Bhagalpur. The corridor is strategically significant as it traverses the Munger–Jamalpur–Bhagalpur belt, an emerging industrial hub in eastern Bihar. This region hosts critical establishments such as the ordnance factory cluster, Jamalpur locomotive workshop, food processing industries including ITC’s facility at Munger, and growing logistics and warehousing hubs. Bhagalpur, renowned for its silk industry, is positioned as a textile and logistics centre, while Barahiya is witnessing growth in food packaging and agro-warehousing.
The new high-speed corridor is designed for vehicular speeds of up to 100 km/h, with an average operational speed of 80 km/h. The travel time between Mokama and Munger will be reduced to approximately 1.5 hours, offering safer and uninterrupted movement for passenger and freight traffic.
The project is expected to generate about 14.83 lakh man-days of direct employment and 18.46 lakh man-days of indirect employment during the construction phase. In addition, the improved connectivity is anticipated to spur economic growth across the region, creating long-term opportunities in allied industries and logistics.
