Eicher Trucks and Buses, a division of VE Commercial Vehicles (VECV), has delivered the first lot of six fully built electric Eicher Skyline Pro-E 12m tarmac buses to IndiGo as part of a strategic partnership aimed at advancing clean energy adoption in the aviation sector.
The deployment at Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru, marks Eicher’s entry into ground support equipment with its first-ever tarmac electric bus delivery. The initiative underscores the shared vision of Eicher and IndiGo to drive operational efficiency, sustainable infrastructure, and zero-emission mobility solutions tailored for specialized applications.
The electric tarmac buses will be used to transport passengers between the terminal and aircraft stands. IndiGo, India’s leading airline, has been taking significant steps to minimize the environmental impact of its operations, and this collaboration further strengthens its sustainability drive.
Commenting on the development, Suresh Chettiar, Executive Vice President, Bus Division, VECV, said, “We are honored to partner with IndiGo in their journey towards greener and sustainable ground operations at Kempegowda Airport – recognized for its striking aesthetics and sustainable practices. With a broad range of buses optimized for demanding applications and backed by connected 24X7 service, Eicher is already a familiar name for citizens, school children and factory staff in Bengaluru. With these tarmac coaches, Eicher stands committed to sustainably transporting the 42 million passengers that use this gateway to India’s Silicon Valley each year.”
The Skyline Pro-E 12m electric tarmac bus has been designed specifically for airport operations, offering a seating layout of 17+D with standing space for 52 passengers. It is powered by advanced lithium-iron phosphate batteries and equipped with a CCS2 fast-charging system, ensuring efficient turnaround and continuous operation. The bus is further enhanced with full air suspension, power-assisted steering, and disc brakes on both axles for superior comfort and stability in demanding airport environments.
With in-house EV powertrain development and investments in charging infrastructure through strategic collaborations, VECV aims to scale institutional electrification across sectors. This partnership with IndiGo represents more than just product delivery—it is a joint step towards integrating clean mobility into critical infrastructure operations.
