SCI and PSUs sign MoU to establish Bharat Container Shipping Line

The Shipping Corporation of India Ltd (SCI) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding for the establishment of the Bharat Container Shipping Line (BCSL), a proposed national container carrier aimed at strengthening India’s maritime and logistics capabilities.

The MoU has been signed with Container Corporation of India Ltd, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, Sagarmala Finance Corporation Ltd, V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority, and Chennai Port Authority, reflecting a coordinated public-sector initiative across shipping, ports, rail logistics and maritime financing.

The proposed Bharat Container Shipping Line is envisaged as a strategic national asset that will enhance India’s participation in global container trade while reducing dependence on foreign shipping operators. The initiative is expected to provide stable and cost-efficient container shipping services, supporting Indian exporters and importers and contributing to supply chain resilience.

The signing of the MoU took place in the presence of Sarbananda Sonowal, Ashwini Vaishnaw, and Shantanu Thakur, highlighting the government’s emphasis on integrated development across maritime, port, rail and logistics infrastructure.

The formation of BCSL aligns with the Government of India’s objectives under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative and the Sagarmala programme, which seek to build a robust, efficient and globally competitive maritime ecosystem. The collaboration is expected to strengthen multimodal connectivity, improve container movement efficiency and enhance the overall logistics framework supporting India’s foreign trade.

The MoU marks a significant step towards expanding India’s strategic shipping capacity and reinforcing its long-term goal of developing into a major global maritime hub, supported by operational efficiency, infrastructure integration and national self-reliance.
