In a significant boost to pilgrimage infrastructure, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced a massive Rs 35,000 crore investment to upgrade facilities in Nashik and Trimbakeshwar ahead of the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela scheduled next year.
Addressing saints and seers at a gathering organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Sant Samiti, Fadnavis outlined the scale and preparedness of the state government to host one of India’s largest religious congregations.
Major Infrastructure Rollout
Out of the total planned investment, projects worth Rs 30,000 crore have already been rolled out across Nashik and Trimbakeshwar. These include key developments such as:
- A new terminal at Nashik Airport
- A 66-km ring road aimed at easing traffic congestion
- Urban infrastructure upgrades to support increased pilgrim flow
Additionally, projects valued at Rs 5,000 crore are set to commence shortly, further strengthening connectivity and civic amenities.
Learning from the Past
Reflecting on the previous Kumbh Mela held 12 years ago, Fadnavis acknowledged gaps in infrastructure due to limited preparation time. Drawing from that experience, the state has undertaken early and structured planning this time to ensure a seamless and memorable experience for devotees.
To enhance execution, a government delegation also visited the Prayagraj Kumbh Mela to study operational best practices.
Institutional Strengthening
In a first, the state has established a dedicated Kumbh authority to oversee preparations. Senior leader Girish Mahajan has been appointed as the Kumbh Mela minister to drive coordination and execution across departments.
Focus on River Rejuvenation
A key highlight of the preparations is the commitment to restore the sanctity of the Godavari River. The Chief Minister assured that the river would be made pollution-free before the event, enabling devotees to bathe in clean, flowing water.
Special attention is being given to Kushavarta Kund—the sacred origin point of the river—where a dedicated water purification project is underway.
Expanding Pilgrim Infrastructure
The government has also approved the permanent acquisition of land at Sadhugram, the designated settlement area for saints during the mela. Plans include:
- Expansion and extension of existing ghats
- Construction of additional bathing ghats
- Improved accommodation and logistics facilities
Anticipated Surge in Footfall
Officials expect the upcoming Kumbh Mela to witness a tenfold increase in pilgrim footfall compared to the previous edition, underscoring the need for robust infrastructure and meticulous planning.
With large-scale investments, institutional reforms, and a strong focus on sustainability, Maharashtra is positioning the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh as a benchmark event in religious tourism and urban infrastructure readiness.
